Amity High School Student Government Meeting                                                           3/5/12

A regular monthly meeting of the Amity High School Student Government was held on March 6th 2012 at 7:00 in the media center.

1. Mr. Marazzi called the meeting to order at 7:08.

2. 58 members were recorded present on the roll call.

3. The Pledge of Allegiance was skipped due to time.

4. Corresponding Secretary Report

Zhang Liu reported on a suggestion for an ugly sweater Day.

5. Treasury Report

Sarah Giovanniello reported around $9,000 was in the account.

6. Class Council Reports

The Freshman Class President sated that they are currently planning for events in March and April.

The Sophomore Class made $1,400 from bake sales and they are currently working on a parking pass raffle.

The Junior Class is currently looking into a DJ service and the prom theme is officially midnight in Paris

The Senior Class has $14,000 with the profits made from Mr. Spartan.

Old Business

7.  Executive Session

The meeting went into executive session from 7:12 to 7:14.

 

8. Daffodils

Tricia thanked everybody who sold daffodils and the student government raised $2,850 for the American Caner Association.

New Business 

9. Food Drive

Alex Marieb was not present during this meeting. Mr. Marazzi stated that the drive would last from March 19th to the first week in April. Alex is currently working on making advertisements and Mr. Marazzi asked everybody to talk to one class to advertise as well. Rewards are given to the class who donated the most.

10. Auditorium Naming

Thomas Falcigno explained the current question of naming the auditorium after Dr. Brady. Thomas was asked by the BOE for the student’s opinion on the matter.

Mr. Marazzi spoke on the issue and felt that another place should be named in honor of Dr. Brady. Thomas Falcigno felt that the auditorium should be named after Dr. Brady because of his support for the arts at Amity. Some members of the student government felt that a place like the administrative wing, main hallway or cafeteria would be more fitting to honor Dr. Brady.

Resolution expressing the sense of the Amity High School Student Government that one area in the high school should be named after Dr. Brady.

Vote: Unanimous

Resolution expressing the sense of the Amity High School Student Government that some place other than the Auditorium should be named in honor of Dr. Brady.

Yea: 36

Nay: 15

Abstain: 7

11. Amendment to Student Handbook

The Amendment to the student handbook by Joe Stein was read and discussed in length at the meeting.

Motion to Approve the Amendment to The Student Handbook Presented By Joe Stein

Yea: 7

Nay: 50

Abstain: 1

Open Forum

Eliza Dillaway stated that she was not convinced that the High School Challenge was being led correctly and she wanted to make sure that the student government was continuously updated. Mr. Marazzi appointed Becca Jiang and Jennifer Eng to continuously update us with information from Charlie.

The issue of the rock outside the school was brought up and no group or single person wanted to deface the rock or what is currently on it. This will be brought up at the next principal’s committee meeting.
