Co. Minutes Dec. 9th 2011

Amity High School Principal’s Committee Meeting                  December 9, 2011

A Principal’s Committee Meeting of The Amity High School Student Government was held on December 9th, 2011 at 7:10 A.M. in the Principal’s Conference Room.

1. Dr. Britton called the meeting to order at 7:10 A.M.

2. 10 members of the student government were present in addition to members of the public.

3. February Break

Dr. Britton said that the school board was considering getting rid of February break so that the school could be let out earlier in June. The committee opposed this idea saying students use February break to relax from midterms, janitors need to clean the building, and there is not guarantee that schools would end on June 16th.

4. Area to take Tests and Quizzes

Jessica Malinconico brought up the issue of places to take test and quizzes. She stated that rooms like the STEM room fill up and are loud. Dr. Britton said that there are places like the library and the technology room, which are quiet places where students can take test and quizzes.

5. Side Entrance

Sasha Weitzman brought up the issue of the side entrance being blocked. Dr. Britton stated that this was because of a car accident that occurred when one car tried to make a U-turn on Newton Road. Dr. Britton felt that this was a safety issue and does not want any future danger. Because this property is the towns, the police can monitor it. The side entrance closure is not because of students smoking.

6. School Climate Committee

Alex Marieb brought up the issue of another spirit day or dance. Dr. Britton brought up the school climate committee lead by Mr. Schumann, Director of Counseling. The committee is in charge of conducting surveys about school climate issues and creates action plans based on the results of the surveys. Many students have asked for another dance and Tricia Coffey said that playing music over the load speaker might be a way to create school spirit. Mr. Schumann stated that he would like to see student representatives come to the committee meetings. The Climate Committee has worked on anti-bullying action and a finalized climate plan. Nikki Saadat expressed her dissatisfaction with the committee and the lack of student representatives. The committee decided to discuss this at the next student government meeting to appoint students representatives to the Climate Committee.

7. Adjournment

Dr. Britton asked that the committee meet after the holiday break. Having nothing more to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 A.M.

Respectfully Submitted,

Thomas Falcigno

Secretary of The Amity High School Student Government

(Thomas Falcigno was not present at this meeting so he appointed Sasha Weitzman to record the minutes of this meeting.)
